A customer finds the vehicle they want. It has the features they’ve been researching, the test drive goes well, and they can picture themselves driving it home.
Then, the conversation turns to cost. The excitement is still there, but so are the questions.
For Gen Z customers, especially first-time buyers, purchasing a vehicle can mean taking on expenses they’ve never managed before. Agreeing to a monthly payment is one decision. Feeling comfortable with the financial commitment that follows is another.
In part one of this series, we explored how connected conversations can help young buyers move from feeling anxious to confident. That continuity becomes especially important when customers are trying to understand what ownership will mean for their budget.
Gen Z is looking beyond the price tag.
A customer might be comfortable with the vehicle’s price and still have questions about whether they can afford to own it.
What will maintenance look like? How much should they expect to spend on fuel? What do the financing terms mean for their budget?
According to Capital One’s research, 25 percent of Gen Z respondents selected total ownership cost, including fuel, maintenance, and upkeep, as their most important financial consideration. Other generations prioritized the final sales price.
Your dealership might already be doing a lot to help:
  • Maybe you offer payment calculators and financing information online.
  • Your salespeople spend time discussing options that fit each customer’s budget.
  • Your F&I team explains available protection products and their benefits.
Yet, a buyer can understand each number individually and still struggle to see how everything fits together. Those unanswered questions can follow them through the purchase, making a vehicle they’re excited about feel like a commitment they’re unsure of.
Your team has an opportunity to help young customers feel more confident in your dealership by bringing the full picture into focus.
Make the commitment easier to understand.
Think about how much a first-time buyer is taking in. Loan terms, interest rates, protection options, and maintenance needs may all be unfamiliar. An explanation that feels routine to your team could be the first time a customer has heard it.
Giving those conversations a little more attention can help customers feel comfortable asking the questions that matter to them.
That could mean:
  • Walking through financing terms and explaining how different options affect both monthly payments and the total amount paid.
  • Discussing routine maintenance needs so customers know what to plan for after the purchase.
  • Clearly explaining available protection options, including their costs, coverage, and limitations.
Each explanation gives the buyer something concrete to consider. They can compare choices, understand the trade-offs, and decide what fits their needs.
Confidence depends on consistency.
Those explanations carry more weight when they build on what the customer already knows.
Maybe a shopper explored payment options on your website or discussed a budget with a salesperson. Having that information available as the conversation moves into F&I gives your team a useful starting point.
Think about what happens when the numbers change without a clear explanation. A customer who felt ready to move forward may begin questioning whether they understood the offer in the first place.
When something changes, explaining what changed and why can help preserve the confidence your team has worked to build.
Clear digital presentations and connected sales and F&I workflows can make those conversations easier to follow. With consistent information available, employees can spend more time walking through choices and helping customers understand the commitment.
Help the excitement carry into ownership.
Finding the right vehicle is a milestone. Understanding how it fits into everyday life helps customers feel ready to make it their own.
Your dealership can help connect those two moments. Every clear explanation and consistent conversation gives young buyers a better understanding of what they’re choosing and what to expect after they drive home.
That’s an opportunity to make your dealership part of the independence and sense of accomplishment that brought them there in the first place.
In part three, we’ll explore how to give your employees more time for the personal interactions that turn that confidence into trust.
