ASOTU CON promised to be a space for meaningful conversations — a place to “inspire active participation and innovation within the industry.” After attending for the first time, I can confidently say: it delivered on that promise and then some.
The four-day event was packed with workshops, speakers, live podcasts, parties, and networking opportunities. All the traditional elements of a great conference were there. But what caught me off guard — in the best way — was something more intangible: a spark of magic.
There was love for our industry and the people in it.
There was genuine connection.
There was collaboration between individuals who rarely get to share space.
And most importantly, there was a shared desire to move the automotive industry forward — together.
After soaking in the sessions, conversations, and community, here are my top takeaways that I believe will create ripples across our industry.
Guessing Is Expensive
Trying new things is hard. Getting buy-in takes time. Trust is earned. But guessing your way through a process because you’re not using the right tools? That’s even more expensive.
In the main stage session with our VP of Marketing, Greg Uland, Ed Roberts, and Allan Brown, one quote jumped off the page in my notes: “Guessing is expensive.”
The conversation centered around implementing new technologies, particularly automation, and the real cost of not doing so. When you don’t have the data, the processes, or the tools in place, you’re left with guesswork. And guesswork costs time, efficiency, and ultimately revenue.
Better Together
In the session One Customer, One Story with Tony Fowler (Reynolds and Reynolds) and Phill Gill (Gill Auto Group), the message was clear: your tools shouldn’t just coexist — they should communicate.
They emphasized the importance of choosing platforms that integrate seamlessly with one another. When your systems talk to each other, your team works smarter, not harder. The result? A clearer customer story, a more efficient process, and a better experience all around.
The Golden Record
I learned a new term this week: The Golden Record. Think of the most accurate, unified customer record possible. It pulls data that might live in silos — like your DMS, CRM, or social tools — and compiles a single, comprehensive version of the truth.
In a world where fragmented information leads to missed opportunities or incorrect targeting, the Golden Record helps you operate with confidence. It’s not just about having more data — it’s about having the right data in one place. That echoed back to Tony’s session, where he showed how Curator, Gubagoo’s Unified Intelligence Engine, can bring together every type of data and use consumer history to tailor marketing via talk tracks, texts, and emails based on customer preferences.
The Auto Industry Isn’t Made of Cars, It’s Made of People
Yes, new technology is exciting. And yes, change can be scary. The industry moves fast, and it’s tempting to get swept up in AI, automation, and worst-case-scenario headlines. But the core truth?
People are still the center of everything we do. Building a business people want to work for — and customers want to work with — starts with caring. When you treat employees and customers as more than just numbers, you earn trust, improve retention, and build a reputation that lasts.
ASOTU CON wasn’t just a collection of sessions and swag bags (although I did get a pretty awesome scarf…). It was a movement — one that reminded me why I love this industry and the people in it. If the energy we experienced in Baltimore carries into the months ahead, I believe big things are coming — not just for businesses, but for the humans behind them.
