Career transitions are hard, and sometimes we lose our voices in the process. When adjusting to a new workplace, it's normal to sit back and observe at first, but eventually, we all have to dive in and be part of their world. After all, they hired you for a reason!
So, how do we find our voices while navigating these new worlds?
Start with relationships.
Notice which coworkers share ideas constructively and draw positive attention from leadership in meetings. But instead of simply admiring from afar, consider building a mentor-mentee relationship with them to learn from their approach and presence.
Try celebrating your coworkers by boosting each other up in meetings. Amplifying your peers’ good ideas will not only build trust, but it may also encourage them to do the same.
Sharpen communication.
How you share ideas matters just as much as the ideas themselves. Do extensive research, organize your thoughts, and choose specific wording. Respect your coworkers’ time by staying on topic and avoiding tangents. If you don’t, people may tune out – no matter how good your point is.
Check your perspective.
We all have that one colleague we can’t quite read. It’s common to second-guess yourself based on how you think others see you. But remember, just because you think someone feels a certain way doesn’t mean it’s true. Before spiraling, ask yourself– is this a fact or an assumption?
Practice confidence.
You don’t have to jump into extroversion all at once; start small outside of work. Join clubs, groups, or events that require talking to strangers to build your conversational skills. Then, bring those skills to work by scheduling casual 1:1s with coworkers you’d like to get to know.
Eventually, you’ll build the confidence to speak up comfortably in larger groups but remember: that takes intention and practice.
Finding your voice in a new workplace doesn’t happen overnight — it’s a process built on connection, clarity, perspective, and determination. Remember, it’s not about becoming someone else to fit in, but about bringing the best of yourself to the table.
