Since starting my internship at Reynolds, one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that the professional relationships I’ve built are just as valuable as the skills I’ve gained.
Whether it’s learning new names, navigating team dynamics, or acclimating to an unfamiliar environment, it's easy to feel pressured to get everything right. But building strong workplace relationships doesn't require having all the right answers from day one. Here are a few things that helped me as I settled into my role.
Make a Strong First Impression First impressions are more than introductions. Arriving on time, maintaining a positive attitude, and conducting yourself professionally show that you value your work and respect your coworkers.
Showing enthusiasm and a willingness to learn helps coworkers see you as approachable and open to feedback. These early interactions help establish credibility and make it easier to build positive relationships.
Listen and Ask Thoughtful Questions Asking thoughtful questions shows coworkers that you value their knowledge and are eager to learn. Instead of thinking about what you'll say next, focus on comprehending what your coworkers are saying. The more you understand how different roles contribute to the organization, the easier it becomes to work across teams.
Be Reliable and Prepared Trust is earned through consistent actions. Coming prepared for meetings, following through on commitments, and communicating when plans change show your coworkers they can depend on you.
Being prepared also helps meetings stay productive and allows your team to make decisions more efficiently. Over time, these habits make it easier for your team to work together and keep projects moving forward.
Offer Support When You Can Helping your coworkers shows you're willing to contribute beyond your own responsibilities. Whether you're sharing a resource, volunteering to assist with a project, or stepping in when needed, these efforts strengthen your professional reputation. Looking for ways to help shows you're invested in helping the team succeed.
Stay Connected After the First Conversation Building workplace relationships doesn’t end after introducing yourself. Continue saying hello, checking in, or following up on projects you’ve worked on together.
